UNGA's Human Rights prize to the Global Coalition on the right to a healthy environment

UNGA's Human Rights prize to the Global Coalition on the right to a healthy environment

As participants and partners of the Global Coalition, we participated on Monday, October 9 2023, at Palais des Nations - Mezzanine (Building E, 2nd floor), in the event of the UN Human Rights Prize 2023 awarded to the Global Coalition of Civil Society, Indigenous Peoples, Social Movements, and Local Communities for the Universal Recognition of the Human Right to a Clean, Healthy, and Sustainable Environment.

These successes were made possible by joint efforts by civil society, Indigenous Peoples organisations, social movements, local communities and the leadership of several countries spearheaded by the Human Rights Council’s core group on human rights and the environment, comprising Costa Rica, the Maldives, Morocco, Slovenia and Switzerland.

In July 2023, the United Nations designated the Global Coalition of Civil Society, Indigenous Peoples, Social Movements, and Local Communities for the Universal Recognition of the Human Right to a Clean, Healthy, and Sustainable Environment as one of the five recipients of the 2023 UN Prize in the Field of Human Rights.

This prize recognises the important leadership role the Global Coalition plays in supporting the core group on human rights and the environment in their successful efforts to secure the universal recognition of the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment.

Representatives from Permanent Missions, experts and stakeholders were present, joining representatives from a broad range of civil society and Indigenous Peoples’ organisations in celebrating the second anniversary of the recognition of the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment by the Human Rights Council, as well as the awarding of the UN prize to the Global Coalition.

The reception commenced with brief opening remarks and offered the opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions with fellow attendees.
