Chile Assumes Pro Tempore Presidency of the Tax Platform for Latin America and the Caribbean (TPLAC)
We celebrate Chile's assumption of the pro tempore presidency of the Tax Platform for Latin America and the Caribbean (TPLAC). This decision constitutes a fundamental step in renewing the platform's impetus for regional cooperation in tax matters and strengthening the institutional framework built over the last year.
The TPLAC - created in July 2023 with the Declaration of Cartagena de Indias - is a crucial institution for building a space for the integration of the Ministries of Treasury, Economy, and Finance of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). The platform aims to promote dialogue and guide international and regional tax policies to be inclusive, equitable, sustainable, favorable to growth, and contribute to reducing inequalities in member countries. The platform aims to build common positions and exchange helpful information for developing and improving the state's tax policies in the region.
Under the previous presidency of Colombia, the platform made significant progress in its institutionalisation, articulating with the private sector and the Civil Society Advisory Council (of which GI-ESCR is part) through working groups based on specific study topics. The objective of this thematic articulation is based on the creation of inputs around tax progressivity, environmental taxation, and tax benefits to generate best practice tools that feed the debate on how to address the tax reforms necessary for the future.
We also highlight the Colombian presidency's receptiveness to the Human Rights approach to fiscal policy that we have promoted from the Advisory Council, particularly celebrating the remarkable work and dialogue of the former Minister of Finance and Public Credit of Colombia, José Antonio Ocampo, and the former Technical Vice Minister, María Fernanda Valdés Valencia.
