Debating on a “Human Rights Economy” at the Major Global Gathering of Feminist Economics

Once again, we participated in the Annual Conference of the International Association for Feminist Economics (IAFFE), a leading global organisation dedicated to advancing feminist economics.

This year's theme was "Caught Between the Digital Revolution and a Crisis of Democracy. Feminist Economics Responses and Imaginations for the Future".

The event took place in Rome, Italy, from 3 to 5 July 2024. The theme sought to provoke a critical reflection on feminist economics responses to two of the defining features of the current economic and political landscape: the technological breakthroughs of a digital economy on the one hand and a crisis of democracy, political polarisation, and backlash on the other.

The conference was one of the largest gatherings on feminist economics in the world. Over 800 scholars, activists, and policymakers from 85 countries met in person and online to share research, insights, and strategies for advancing gender equality and promoting inclusive and sustainable economies.

GI-ESCR co-convened a panel on the Radical Potential of Human Rights. The roundtable explored strategies for reclaiming and advancing a human rights approach that propels a radical feminist agenda for economic transformation. The panel comprised Radhika Balakrishnan, James Heintz, Diane Elson, Magdalena Sepulveda, Maria Ron Balsera, Gaby Oré Aguilar, and Caroline Dommen.
