Emphasising Social Protection: Our Role in the Summit of the Future Preparation
As part of the Preparatory Process for the Summit of the Future (SotF), along with other members of the Global Coalition for Social Protection Floors (GCSPF), we delivered two statements highlighting the importance of including universal social protection in the Pact of the Future and related processes.
The Permanent Representatives of Germany and Namibia to the United Nations hosted a series of consultations aimed at providing the opportunity for all stakeholders to share their reactions and views on Rev. 2 of the Pact before the final intergovernmental negotiations as part of their work as co-facilitators of the preparatory process of the Summit of the Future.
During the consultations, the first statement we delivered during the 15th session of the “Road to the Summit Discussion Series” on 25 July 2024 stressed the current disconnection between the human right to social protection and the reality in practice, where more than half of the global population has no access to it. We also called for the international community’s essential and urgent support to the system building, rollout, and financing of social protection floors worldwide to achieve some key objectives of the 2030 Agenda.
The second statement, delivered during the Informal Consultation with Member States and Stakeholders on 31 July 2024, by recalling the arguments of the previous statement, regretted the frequent absence of the word “universal” in Rev. 2 of the Pact of the Future. As such, it called for social protection not to remain a privilege for the few formally employed ones but as a human right to be enjoyed by all, thus demanding the inclusion of universal social protection and the assurance of adequately financed social protection floors by 2030.
These statements sought to influence the permanent mission’s standing before the soon-to-conclude negotiations on Rev. 3 of the Pact of the Future, before its launch in New York on 22 September 2024, during the inaugural day of the Summit of the Future.
