Feminist Advocacy at the 15th AWID Forum

Feminist Advocacy at the 15th AWID Forum

We joined over 3,000 feminists, activists, and allies at the 15th Association for Women's Rights in Development (AWID) Forum, held from 2 to 5 December 2024 in Bangkok, Thailand.

Under the theme "Together We Rise," the event provided a vibrant space for participants to celebrate diversity, foster community, and confront the root causes of gender inequality.

We led two pivotal activities during the forum, spotlighting transformative approaches to care systems and energy transitions as integral components of global gender equity.

Advancing a New Social Pact on Care

On 2 December, with ESCR-Net, we co-hosted a session on the "Social Pact on Care," rooted in the 6R Framework: recognition, redistribution, reduction, rights, representation, and reformulation of the economy. The session convened diverse voices, including caregivers and care recipients, to explore how care systems can be reimagined through local, national, and global advocacy.

Our Programme Officer on Corporate Capture, Michelle Cañas, emphasised the critical role of fiscal policy reform in creating the revenue needed for robust public care systems. She highlighted structural reforms in international tax architecture as a cornerstone for addressing inequalities in care systems.

Other prominent speakers included:

  • Rosa Fatima Mamani, Red Chimpu Warmi, Bolivia
  • Melania Chiponda, Shine Campaign, Zimbabwe
  • Raina Bhattacharya, International Domestic Workers Federation, India
  • Emilia Reyes, Equidad de Género, México.

Their discussions underlined the importance of adopting an intersectional lens to connect care systems with economic and climate justice, pushing for a regenerative economy grounded in human rights and environmental sustainability.

Workshop on a Feminist Plan for a Just Energy Transition

On 3 December, we convened a workshop introducing the draft "Principles on Gender and Human Rights in the Energy Transition." The session explored the structural failures of existing energy systems, their gendered implications, and the potential of human rights frameworks to drive equitable energy reforms.

The workshop encouraged dialogue among participants and invited organisations working at the intersection of energy, climate, gender, and human rights to collaborate on this advocacy tool. It aimed to advance feminist energy systems that promote environmental sustainability and social equity, contributing to a just transition critical for averting global environmental crises.

Building Strength through Solidarity

The AWID Forum underscored the transformative potential of collective action. The motto, "Together We Rise," reinforced GI-ESCR's commitment to advancing systemic change, from advocating for adequate funding for care systems to promoting feminist frameworks for energy transitions.

We plan to integrate the insights and collaborations from the forum into our ongoing advocacy for a feminist, sustainable, and equitable future. By connecting diverse movements and fostering solidarity, we continue to champion bold solutions to interconnected social, economic, and environmental challenges.
