On October 12, 2022, GI-ESCR's team in Chile met with representatives of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, from the state of Florida, USA. We talked about their "Fair Food Program", a model based on social responsibility driven by farm workers, producers and retail buyers.
It is an innovative initiative that has successfully eradicated human trafficking, forced labour, sexual harassment and abuse of farm workers in the fields where it is implemented. This partnership advances against the precarious employment of farm workers in North America, with a focus on the defense of economic, social, cultural and environmental rights.
This unique partnership between farm workers and end-buyers guarantees decent wages and working conditions by harnessing the power of the market. Its origins lie in Florida's migrant agriculture in the tomato fields. For 20, years they fought to end human trafficking, forced labour and sexual harassment, and succeeded in creating the Fair Food Programme, which is based on a virtuous network of end buyers, farm fields and workers. The end-buyers pay a special premium for the production of the programme's member farms, which in turn implement a prevention programme run and managed by the workers themselves.
