GI-ESCR participates in Working Group on discrimination against women and girls
On Wednesday 11 October, Alejandra Lozano, Programme Officer on Environmental Justice at the Global Initiative for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights participated on a briefing session with the independent experts of the UN Working Group on Discrimination Against Women and Girls in Law and Practice (WGDAWG). The objective was to discuss the most recent thematic report issued by the WGDAWG on "Gendered inequalities of poverty: feminist and human rights-based approaches" and provide insights on the environmental dimensions of gendered poverty and inequalities.
To this end, GI-ESCR presented relevant insights on the gender differentiated impacts of the global environmental breakdown and shared guidance to encourage the Special Procedure to addresses more systemically the environmental and gender nexus as part of its mandate. GI-ESCR discussed the importance of promoting a gender-just transition towards sustainability for the realisation of women’s and girls’ rights in line with the most recent report issued by the WGDAWG.
The event aimed to promote a substantive discussion with UN experts, civil society organisations and other relevant human rights institutions to inform and influence the mandate of the Working Group. The session also provided opportunity for an active exchange between UN experts and participants to discuss opportunities of collaboration and engagement with the Special Procedure to support a feminist and human rights based transition towards sustainability.
