Global Call to Recognise Care as a Human Right and a Public Good
We made a global call with partners to recognise care as a human right and a public good. The joint statement, issued amidst the last negotiations of the Pact for the Future and during a crucial global socio-economic transformation, highlights the undervalued and underfunded nature of care work, disproportionately impacting women and marginalised communities.
In early September, we joined forces with Public Services International (PSI), ActionAid, the Center for Economic and Social Rights (CESR), DAWNFeminist, Oxfam, Tax Justice Network (TJN), FEMNET and WomanKind, to launch a landmark statement that recognises care as both a human right and a public good. This collaborative effort underscores the critical need for governments worldwide to invest in care systems that are accessible, equitable, and of high quality.
By framing care as a human right, the statement also advocates for reimagining care policies that prioritise the well-being of individuals and communities while addressing systemic inequalities.
The statement also calls on governments to take immediate and sustained actions to recognise, protect, and fulfill the right to care by ensuring that care services are universally accessible, adequately funded, and free from market-driven inequalities. The call also emphasises the importance of supporting care workers who deliver these vital services through fair wages, decent working conditions, and robust social protection.
Drafting this statement aligns with our ongoing commitment to promote and protect economic, social, and cultural rights globally and marks a significant milestone in our strategic commitment to treating care as a collective good and a social responsibility.
