Together With Partners, We Discussed Corporate Accountability in the Transition at the 60th Session of the UNFCCC
GI-ESCR participated in a side event at the 60th Session of the UNFCCC Subsidiary Bodies organised by partners IBON International, FIAN International and the Interamerican Association for Environmental Defense (AIDA). The event on 'The Role of Corporate Accountability in the Context of a Just Transition' also included participation from colleagues from the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre, Anti-Slavery International and ESCR-Net. The panel featured experts from social movements and civil society, including Alejandra Lozano, our Programme Officer on Environmental Justice.
The event addressed the critical role of corporate accountability in supporting a just and equitable transition to sustainable societies. At the same time, panellists discussed the phenomenon of corporate capture of the transition process, emphasising the gaps in protecting human rights.
The discussion also focused on redefining the transition process from the perspective of the most affected communities and sectors. In particular, the examples of the extraction of critical minerals and the agricultural sector were introduced to assess the impacts on local communities and the need to seek people-led solutions.
Additionally, our Programme Officer, Alejandra Lozano, evaluated the work done within the UNFCCC on the energy transition. In particular, while assessing the work of the Just Transition Work Programme, she stressed that it cannot remain a mere dialogue on lessons learned but rather needs to address the transition's human rights implications thoroughly.
By participating in this event, GI-ESCR seeks to continue mobilising and engaging partners in advocating for a just and equitable transition to sustainable societies.
