Virtual Consultation on the Water-Energy Nexus with the UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights to Water and Sanitation

Virtual Consultation on the Water-Energy Nexus with the UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights to Water and Sanitation

On 6 December, we facilitated a virtual consultation with the UN Special Rapporteur on the rights to safe drinking water and sanitation, Mr. Pedro Arujo, on his upcoming thematic report to the Human Rights Council on the theme of the Water and Energy Nexus.

The primary objective of this report is to present data on the current status of human rights to water and sanitation and their connection to sustainable and clean energy necessary for a dignified life. The conversation included an examination of the challenges, best practices, and lessons learned in the context of developing virtuous cycles of mutual supportiveness between the right to water and clean, renewable, efficient energy services.

During the consultation, Mr. Arujo explained the rationale of the report, and the conversation was divided into three key sections:

i) Sources of clean and safe drinking water and its nexus with sustainable energy;

ii) The state of legislation and implementation of public policies regarding safe drinking water sanitation and energy, including frameworks that ensure the right to sustainable and clean energy, and;

iii) Promising practices, gaps, and challenges in accessing safe and clean drinking water, sanitation, and sustainable and clean energy.

The consultation contributed to mapping some of the report's key elements and informed that the call for inputs will be released early in 2025.
