Energy Transition Legal Framework in Chile

Energy Transition Legal Framework in Chile

The publication 'Energy Transition Legal Framework in Chile' explores the country’s legal and policy framework for a fair and inclusive energy transition, rooted in commitments to climate justice, social equity, and economic development.

Chile’s approach integrates international agreements like the Paris Agreement and ILO’s Just Transition Guidelines, as well as national policies prioritising environmental sustainability, Indigenous rights, and gender equality.

The government has implemented initiatives like the 'Agenda de Energía 2022-2026' and the creation of an Interministerial Committee to ensure that socio-environmental impacts, labour transitions, and community well-being are considered in energy planning. Additionally, Chile's energy transition includes efforts to phase out coal, develop renewable projects and promote community participation through measures such as the Escazú Agreement.

Despite these advances, Chile’s regulatory landscape still lacks comprehensive legislation directly addressing a fair energy transition, which could set uniform standards for private and public sectors alike.
