The Impact of the Privatisation and Commodification of Healthcare on the Right to Health in Côte d'Ivoire

The Impact of the Privatisation and Commodification of Healthcare on the Right to Health in Côte d'Ivoire

This report, which was written by Amadou Dahou, Kouamé Amani, Stéphane Koffi Kouadjo and Youssouf Bamba from the Mouvement Ivoirien des Droits Humains (MIDH), along with Aya Douabou from the Global Initiative for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, examines the impact of the privatisation and commodification of healthcare on the right to health in Côte d'Ivoire.

It highlights the challenges posed by the increasing role of private actors in the healthcare system, which exacerbates inequalities and hinders access to essential health services. Despite various reforms and investments, significant issues remain, such as insufficient public funding, inadequate infrastructure and a high prevalence of unauthorised private health facilities. The study reveals that privatisation and market-driven approaches have infiltrated the public sector, leading to discriminatory practices and affecting vulnerable populations, including women and people with disabilities. The report also underscores the need for improved regulation and oversight to ensure equitable access to quality healthcare for all citizens.

The report also features an executive summary, which can be accessed here.
