GI-ESCR co-organised International Symposiums on the Right to Education
GI-ESCR collaborated with eduCoop, the Right to Education Initiative, the University of Geneva and other partners for the organisation of the first edition of the Symposiums Internationaux du Droit à l’Education (International Symposiums on the Right to Education) held on 29 June 2023.
The International Symposiums on the Right to Education (S-I-D-E) is an annual online event bringing together researchers from different professional backgrounds (junior and senior academics, civil society organisations) and geographical areas (North and South), with the aim of sharing research findings in support of the effective implementation of the right to education at the international level.
S-I-D-E is a scientific event, both accessible and eco-friendly, as there are no registration/participation fees, no foreign travel and a strong focus on voices from the South and non-English-speaking contexts in a constructive space.
S-I-D-E was also an opportunity for the CSOs currently enrolled on the 2nd edition of the University of Geneva training on research capacity towards advocacy for the right to education to present their research findings produced as part of the training. GI-ESCR provided support to several members of the francophone network to be able to take part in the training.
S-I-D-E covered a wide range of topics such as early childhood care and education, education financing, higher education, privatisation and commercialisation of education, the effectiveness of free education, education as a tool to eliminate harmful cultural practices, etc.
Specifically, 19 papers from a regional diversity were presented: 13 from Sub-Saharan Africa, 1 from North Africa, 1 from Central America and; 4 from Europe.
The diversity of speakers was also influential as there were: 7 senior academics, 2 junior academics, 12 CSOs, among which 10 women and 13 men (including duos).
GI-ESCR commends its partners, the selection committee and the speakers for such a ground-breaking event. It creates a space at the international level for French-speaking researchers and CSOs to debate and reflect on the multifaceted challenges of the right to education.
