GI-ESCR promotes a human rights approach to social protection at the ITC-ILO

On 12 September, as part of the Academy on Social Security of the International Training Centre (ITC) of the ILO, our Executive Director, Magdalena Sepúlveda, participated in the plenary session on Doing Things Rights: building universal social protection systems. The panel sought to set out the internationally agreed framework that should guide the development of national social protection systems and, importantly, provide guidance to national policymakers, administrators and employer and worker representatives on how this can be done concretely at the national level. In other words, making human rights a reality.

Shahra Razavi, the Director of the Social Protection Department at the International Labour Organisation, moderated the panel. The other panellists were Helmut Schwarzer, Head of the Financial and Actuarial Unit of ILO Social Protection Department; Jung Rin Kim, Human Rights Office, Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and Kroum Markov, Social Protection Policy and Legal Specialist, International Labour Organization.

The session was attended by over 100 participants from around the world. The Academy on Social Security is a learning programme on social protection systems. It provides a unique space where policymakers and practitioners exchange knowledge and experience.
