Special Rapporteur on Extreme Poverty and Human Rights: Taking social and economic rights more seriously

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the International Movement ATD Fourth World are pleased to invite you to a side event organized with the Special Rapporteur on Extreme Poverty and Human Rights, Philip Alston, on the theme of "Taking social and economic rights more seriously."

The objectives of the event are to:

· Raise awareness on the importance of treating economic and social rights as human rights and analyse the consequences that flow from the marginal status of economic and social rights within both the domestic and international human rights systems.

· Discuss and analyze the essential components of a potentially effective strategy for promoting economic and social rights as human rights, through the lens of an RIA framework (recognition, institutionalization and accountability).

· Identify what needs to be done to ensure that economic and social rights are finally taken seriously.

The side event will be moderated by Ms. Peggy Hicks, Director, Thematic Engagement, Special Procedures and Right to Development Division, OHCHR.

The panel will also include:

H.E. Ms. Yvette Stevens, Ambassador of Sierra Leone,

Professor Rodrigo Uprimny, UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, and

Ms. Lucy McKernan, from the Global Initiative for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.

The event will take place on Monday, 13 June, from 12:00 to 14:00, in Room XXVII.

Refreshments will be provided.

We look forward to seeing you at our event!
