Tax Wars Documentary Premieres to a Full House in Buenos Aires
On August 14, the documentary 'Tax Wars', directed by Hege Dehli, premiered at Cine Arte Cacodelphia in Buenos Aires, Argentina, drawing a full house. This thought-provoking film brought together experts to discuss one of the most pressing issues in today's global economy: tax justice.
Argentinian economist and journalist Alejandro Bercovich opened the event with a compelling introduction, setting the stage for the film's powerful message. Tax Wars dives into the complex world of international taxation, shedding light on how multinational corporations often avoid paying their fair share of taxes and what can be done to change this.
The documentary features contributions from renowned economists, including Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz, French economists Thomas Piketty and Gabriel Zucman, and Magdalena Sepúlveda Carmona, Executive Director of the Global Initiative for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (GI-ESCR).
These experts are part of the Independent Commission for the Reform of International Corporate Taxation (ICRICT), an initiative committed to overhauling the global tax system to ensure fairness and accountability. They embrace the label 'dreamers' and advocate for more robust taxation on multinational profits. The film showcases their work drafting comprehensive reports, engaging with policymakers, and organising conferences to drive substantial reforms. Through these efforts, they have challenged some of the most powerful entities in the global economy, prompting a re-evaluation of the international tax system.
After the screening, attendees were allowed to ask questions, leading to a lively discussion. Alejandro Bercovich did his best to address the audience's queries, which touched on Argentina's fragile economy, the pervasive inequality in the Latin American region, and potential economic forecasts.
