Understanding the Inequality Impacts of Health PPPs in Middle-Income Countries

On 14 and 15 March, 2024, GI-ESCR took part in a dynamic international workshop titled "Understanding the Inequality Impacts of Health PPPs in Middle-Income Countries." The event, hosted by the Academy of Medical Science Network, brought together experts from Latin America and Africa. Held at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú in Lima, Peru, the workshop aimed to delve into the complexities surrounding health Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) in middle-income countries.

During the workshop, Juana Barragán Díaz, Programme Officer on the Right to Education at GI-ESCR, delivered a 30-minute presentation titled "Private Actors in Healthcare and Education: Assessing the Human Rights Framework." Her presentation tackled crucial questions, including the identification of private actors in health care and education, the growing concerns surrounding the commercialisation of public services, and the role of international human rights law in addressing these challenges. Our Programme Officer concluded her presentation with insightful remarks and proposed a way forward for addressing the issues discussed.

The event provided a valuable platform for experts to exchange insights, discuss strategies, and explore potential solutions to address the nefarious impacts of health PPPs in middle-income countries. GI-ESCR remains committed to advocating for human rights in health and education sectors globally.
